Virginia Beach barbecue is mostly small counter-service shops and smokehouses in the middle and south of the city: Princess Anne Road from Kempsville to Pungo, Indian River Road and Nimmo Parkway. The Pig Shop also has a restaurant on Shore Drive.
How we made this list. The places come from OpenStreetMap records inside Virginia Beach’s city limits, the same data behind our local directory, checked against each place’s own website on Oct. 19, 2026. Where a barbecue shop has no website of its own, we kept it only if the Virginia Department of Health’s food inspection records show a Virginia Beach inspection in the past 12 months; those rows give the address the state records. A Taste of Texas at 455 S. Lynnhaven Road is now listed by the state as Coastal Beach BBQ. We left out Whitner’s, Bubba-N-Frank’s, Mission BBQ and Smokey Bones, which have no Virginia Beach inspection in the past year and whose sites would not confirm a location, and food trucks. Korean barbecue is on our sushi and Asian list. The list is alphabetical. It is not a ranking or a recommendation, and nobody paid to be on it. Run one of these places? Aloha Hawaiian BBQ on Princess Anne Road shares its site with Bangkok Garden Express and serves Hawaiian plate lunches such as short ribs alongside Thai fried rice and noodle dishes. It takes reservations by phone.
Coastal Beach BBQ on South Lynnhaven Road was inspected by the state in September 2026.
Dave’s BBQ on Laskin Road and Donnie’s Barbecue on General Booth Boulevard have recent state inspections; we found no websites of their own.
Ellen’s Homestyle & BBQ Express on Indian River Road was inspected in April 2026.
Malbon’s BBQ on Sykes Avenue was inspected in July 2026.
Oahu Hawaiian BBQ on Virginia Beach Boulevard serves Hawaiian plate lunches and is closed Tuesdays.
The Pig Shop lists two Virginia Beach restaurants, on Indian River Road and on Shore Drive, plus catering and daily specials. State records also show a Pig Shop Bar and Grill at 2500 Tournament Drive.
